Not a Hobby

Uncategorized Jul 17, 2020
It is important to plan and run your Resume Business like a business and not like a hobby. Here's why...

In the early days of running your solo or small business, it can feel like an enjoyable hobby. Treating it as such, however, can lead to a number of problems and most certainly will not lead you to earning six figures.

Here are 4 important steps to consider so that you can START your Resume Business off as a BUSINESS and not as a hobby.

1. Organization: When treating your new business like a hobby, you’re likely to become increasingly disorganized. This is manageable if you only have a few clients, but you’ll quickly find your business growing, and you don't want to spend unnecessary time (that you could be gathering new clients) trying to get organized.

To establish a BUSINESS, you’ll need to develop a system for managing your invoices, expenses, cash flow, and other paperwork, and you’ll want to store it in a centralized location. Fortunately, digital programs make it easier to do so, but it’s best to start thinking about this as soon as possible.

2. Setting a Schedule:
Running a small business means unexpected events will pop up on occasion and some flexibility is helpful. However, one of the keys of a successful BUSINESS is setting and keeping a schedule as consistently as possible.  Again, you may need to improvise on occasion, but setting a schedule [even for a part time business] and sticking with it, ensures you’re able to operate in a professional manner and deliver first-class services.

3. Communication: If you only have a handful of clients, contacting them through your personal phone might be an acceptable option at the beginning. Setting up a more formal line of communication (even just a second line on a cell phone) can help tremendously. Other communication systems we will be discussing in the future include a creating a dedicated website and email address.

4. Separate Work and Business Life:
This is definitely harder that is sounds for most people, and some of the appeal of a business you can run from home (once you leave your 9 to 5) is the ability to complete home-related tasks throughout the day.

It is good to start from day one taking steps to ensure your business life and personal life don’t mingle too much. Setting up a dedicated home office (or even home space/corner) can help ensure you’re able to mentally separate yourself and your family life from your business. Taking a break from work ensures you’re able to be at your best while focusing on your business.
